Memory Lane: 1987 Liverpool, 2021 Liverpool, and A Life In Between
… So, I went and looked up what the Reds were up to that heady week, as 1987/88 was of course a record-breaking season.
Looking back to the day before that firework’s night Wembley gig, 4th November 1987, Liverpool had drawn 1-1 at Wimbledon, albeit that itself was just days after beating Everton 2-0 at home, with the Peter Beardsley shot that thundered off the underside off the bar into the back of the net.
“Oh that’s a lovely goal! That a lovely goal!”
(Barry Davies still sounds like football to me.)
It’s also easy to think of John Barnes the marauding winger, but as you can see he also played two of the best vertical, line-splitting passes you’ll see – one facing forwards, one with a backheel; many years before his days as a passing midfielder.
Jürgen Klopp would have loved him, not that the Reds lack attacking talent right now.
The Reds, at the end of October, had just lost their first game of the season in all competitions – to Everton, again at Anfield, 1-0 in the League Cup.
Alas, Liverpool’s first loss this season – a few weeks ago – was a bit more important, in terms of the competition, but the West Ham game now seems like eons ago.
These were two great Liverpool sides, breaking records and setting pulses all aflutter. In 1987/88, the Reds didn’t lose another game until March, when Everton (again) ended the unbeaten league record. The only league points dropped before October 28th were in a draw away at West Ham, which seems fitting; this year it’s the only fixture the Reds have lost.
