Post-Match Thoughts
Paul Tomkins
Holy cow! I was talking this past week about how Man City fell away in 2019/20, and how a five-point gap was extended between games 10-15.
But this current five-point gap has opened up out of nowhere.
Three games ago Liverpool were drawing at Arsenal, to sit on 21 points, behind Man City on 23. Man City, after four defeats on the spin and two in the league, are still on 23; Liverpool are now on 28.
In addition, Liverpool are also top of the Champions League, and crucially (in terms of sustainability) have the best underlying numbers in both competitions.
So all this is fully merited, with tonight’s 2-0 win against Aston Villa more about digging in, keeping the ball and hitting on the break when the visitors dare to get men forward.
