Anfield again hosted another team’s cup final, its fans’ pilgrimage to see a mythical spectacle that their team cannot really evoke unless the game goes, in some way, utterly mental. And it never really did that, with the Reds winning 2-0, albeit not without some hairy moments.
It’s not routine, a game like this, but Bologna at home is not what whets the Kop’s appetite, or makes fans frenzied. It’s a big game, clearly, but it means more to the visitors. It’s their cup final, their lifetime’s dream.
And it won’t be the best atmosphere Arne Slot will experience, or even close; not a famous European night, and wouldn’t have been unless maybe going 2-0 down and coming back.
