Post-Match Thoughts
Paul Tomkins
Brighton away have been a bogey team, but it's only the second Anfield visit for Roberto De Zerbi.
His team proved difficult and stubborn; the officials scandalously biased, as David Coote – who gives Liverpool nothing – gave 20 fouls against, more than three times as many as he gave the other way; while Paul Tierney could not see Darwin Nunez being pulled back in the box, but Coote could book Alexis Mac Allister for less of a foul. It was that surreal.
Mo Salah, tripped in the box, gets two penalties if he’s Anthony Gordon.
By the end the Reds were admittedly committing some tactical yellow-card fouls, but Coote is not even good enough to ref non-league; not even good enough for Sunday League.
Tierney has still not given Liverpool a VAR decision, 23rd game, and Coote has given nothing in all his games a ref. No wonder the Kop was chanting “cheat!”. It’s ‘weird’ to give Liverpool a ref who has never given them a Big Decision and a VAR who has never given them a Big Decision.
Still, with 30 shots and more possession than a team that averages nearly 63% per game, and a massive xG difference for Jürgen Klopp’s men today, the Reds thoroughly merited the win, making it 26 points gained from losing positions. It was fairly relentless stuff.
An insane start. A shot out of nowhere from Danny Welbeck, but early enough and the pattern of the season. Lucky bounce of the ball and a swing.
