Not too many pundits would’ve predicted Liverpool would be 13 points clear of Newcastle at the turn of the year but that’s exactly what has transpired at the half-way point of the season.

Maybe the signs were there during Liverpool’s 2-1 win at St James’ Park in the reverse fixture back in August, with Newcastle 1-0 up and the Reds down to ten men following Van Dijk’s red card with less than 30 minutes of the match gone, a late Darwin Núñez brace secured maximum points for Liverpool against the odds.
