Well, that’s the tie almost over, at “half-time”, with a convincing 5-1 win at jogging speed.
The aim was always surely to be to keep the group of players together, get 60 minutes (and ideally no more) for as many main players as possible, in order to keep not form or momentum, but rhythm and sharpness; the training game for 60 intense minutes, against a team backed by a bunch of nutters with loudhailers.
That said, playing Ibrahima Konaté for more than 45 minutes seemed odd (as we know he’s always close to the red zone with lots of matches), and he duly limped off. Everyone else seemed to be subbed-off as pre-planned ideas, including Joe Gomez at half-time.
So, in some ways, a bonus that next Thursday is already almost irrelevant, but it’s another first XI player with a possible injury.
